The project was to provide FEL 2 and 3 designs to convert a portion of an existing paper mill into a new process area for high-value products from green liquor. The BSI Engineering team provided P&IDs and Mass balances as well as identified and supplied all utilities.
The design for the green liquor conversion facility project included over 20 new vessels with their associated pumps and heat exchangers. The new vessels required demolishing the basement and much of the ground floor concrete and framing. To better accommodate the processing vessels, the BSI Engineering team designed a new mat foundation along with a multi-level access platform to make the production process easier. A new structure was created alongside the existing structure and was designed specifically to handle hazardous processes.
Additionally, the BSI team assisted in the design and creation of a tank farm and truck loading area, which included turn down mats and containment systems. The specialized design and construction plan allowed the client to retain the existing bridge crane. As part of the electrical engineering services, the BSI team added new MCC sections and re-purposed the existing units with integral VFDs.
